As our rooster approached me aggressively, I stepped towards him and started speaking firmly “ Mr . Butler (his name is Rhett Butler) how dare you etc. has worked every time.

Subscribed. This is so relaxing. I wonder why more people don’t live like this if we don’t actually need to kill animals to survive?

Think that's some very good advice. I've been beside myself recently getting back one of my boys that turned into a handful for quite a while. Love that boy. There are a few that turn out to be plugs though and get culled. Those are the rouges that like to beat up on all the other birds and cause endless drama in the flocks. They create stress and aggression among all the birds and often become a bad influence for younger birds. All the flocks should live a relatively peaceful life and be mostly tolerant of each other. When there's always chasing, feather pulling and fights going on it's time to find the reason for it.

Yes much better to focus on being plant based rather than vegan or vegetarian, etc. It is much less pressure.

My rooster is getting more and more aggressive and I can't get close enough to him to catch and hold him. He's BIG and ornery. I'm really at my wits' end. I don't feel safe in my own yard and it's never relaxing to be out there with the chickens like it used to be. I adopted him 2 yrs ago in the fall and was initially super chill and even ate from my hand, then suddenly he became aggro that spring spring and hasn't let up since. And he's getting worse. Doesn't he get that I'm the food lady?! Boy oh boy was it a mistake to get a rooster (in my case anyway). I can't rehome him because he's aggressive... and I've tried SO hard to coexist with him. Unfortunately nothing is working. And yes, I've developed a fear of him. He has massive spurs! Unfortunately, I only see one way out.

I loooove seeing the flowers and vegetables together 🤤. Also the ducks will be good for pest control! Id love to hear about your nut trees more and just climate/disease differences in ca vs NY. We've had more stable temps in Atlanta lately and less pests which is nice but it won't last! I like your thumbnail fwiw

A few chickens and their rooster turned up at work randomly and we were worried the rooster might get aggressive. We run a farm shop and cafe so a rooster chasing off guests wouldn’t have been ideal. Luckily he’s an absolute sweetheart and so are his hens. No one has tried to claim them as escapees so I guess they live with us now.

I can't believe people still buy these. They're terrible. Where to start.. you can only have small plants that don't require much root space. Don't believe the "they take up less room" because you'd need to put it someplace where it'll get sun to all sides which won't even be possible depending on the time of year so youll have to rotate it somehow. This is not maximizing growing space at all. This is an inefficient system to grow lettuce

I need a crossed beak chicken 🙄 you said it, they can be a companion for another disabled chicken. I have a blind hen and she had a flock ❤❤ I got her baby chicks and they grew out of her and developed their pecking order again after molt and Ramona is obviously moved to the bottom, I got a polish bantam but she is attached to her two sisters and I am not sure if she will bind I should have introduced her at hatch. All these mistakes!! I am going to end up with 200 chickens trying to get my girl a bestie. 😂

And, vegetables can be stored in the basement. Meat eaters who stock a freezer full of dead animals freak out when there’s a power outage and no, a gas power generator can’t sustain for lengthy periods. Vegetarians don’t have to worry about stuff rotting in our refrigerators. I’ve been vegetarian for 40 years and know that you will hear the questions of where do you get your protein? I have never grown my own lentils, chickpeas. And I have nut trees on my property but processing seeds and nuts is much easier to do with the equipment I do not have.

So I currently have 1 rooster who after he turned 1 has gotten aggressive. You mentioned getting another roo. How many hens should I have before getting another roo? I currently have 6 hens. Getting 5 more in April. Would adding more hens calm him down?

Aphids are an indicator of excessive N. You have a deficiency of Beneficial Predator bugs (lady bug, mantis…) soapy water (jadam wetting agent) works for aphids Spray at night when bees do not fly, or better yet leave bugs on till predators find them. Install plants nearby that harbor aphids to already have the predators close

What would it take to completely live off your land as a vegan and make it through the winter? I notice you're not eating much calorically valuable from your land, not growing grains, beans or a substantial amount of starches to even make it through the summer. Is it possible to be a self-sustainable vegan without being forced to utilize industry?

I have never heard someone with nearly the exact same situation as me. The only thing that is different is that we never had really had a good time even in the beginning. My milk never “came in” because her latch was that poor even though I never knew it was bad. How did you know that you were willing to exclusively pump? Also can I ask which bottles you use for his high palate? My daughter also has a very high palate.

    • @SunshineFarm

I started exclusively pumping with a goal of getting back to nursing, but it never worked out. We used evenflo for him but pigeon for my daughter. Both bottles were great!
